It’s Getting Hot in Here

Coping with Hot Flashes Caused by Androgen Deprivation Therapy

Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, pushing us to find strength and resilience we never knew we had. Over the past ten months, my husband has been riding the “rollercoaster that is androgen deprivation therapy.” He and I were told very little by the medical professionals treating him at Moffitt Cancer Center or the Bay Pines VA Hospital regarding the wide range of side effects that come with this treatment. The hospitals where he is being treated told me that a support group for intimate partners of those being treated by Androgen Deprivation Therapy was sorely needed locally and nationally, so I felt a commitment to put my career as a journalist to good use for others who needed this information.

It is my belief that because the prostate gland controls erections and urination, most men don’t want to speak about their challenges and ask their wives (or husbands) to not talk about these issues in public too. Thus very little support is sought or given on the subject of prostate cancer treatment. A lot of couples divorce because of it, which is tragic. We have decided that spreading the message about our story is worth the risk of my husband feeling emasculated. We want to save marriages and prevent tears from being shed by either of you.

Tony is a special man. He is a guys' guy but he is also a very down-to-earth and open person, and talking about his prostate cancer with others has never bothered him. So, as we navigate the complexities of prostate cancer as a family, we are sharing our challenges and victories. Getting through each day is a victory. I can assure you that!

Today, I want to shed light on one particular aspect that affects many men on this treatment path - the impact of hot flashes. Additionally, I will provide helpful tips and tricks, such as cooling blankets, to help manage these symptoms and make each day a little more comfortable.

Understanding Androgen Deprivation Therapy

Androgen deprivation therapy, commonly known as hormone therapy, is a treatment for prostate cancer that suppresses the production of testosterone. By lowering testosterone levels, ADT aims to slow down the growth and spread of cancer cells. While it is an effective treatment, it often comes with its own set of side effects, including hot flashes.

Hot Flashes: A Common Side Effect

Hot flashes are a hallmark side effect of androgen deprivation therapy in men. Normally associated with menopause in women, these sudden waves of intense heat can be unsettling and disruptive. As testosterone levels decline, the body's temperature regulation system can become imbalanced, leading to these uncomfortable episodes.

Tips and Tricks to Manage Hot Flashes

1. Cooling Blankets: Investing in cooling blankets or sheets can provide relief during sleep. These specially designed fabrics help regulate body temperature, ensuring a more comfortable and restful night's sleep.

2. Layer Clothing: Wearing lightweight, breathable fabrics allows for better air circulation and helps manage body heat. Opting for layers allows for easy adjustments as hot flashes come and go. The other side of the hot flash is freezing so have a nice warm, breathable hoodie available for those periods too.

3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated can help regulate body temperature and minimize the intensity of hot flashes.

4. Manage Stress: Stress can exacerbate hot flashes. Exploring stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in hobbies can help reduce their frequency and intensity. If you can work from home and be close to your pets and family, this can greatly help with reducing the severity of hot flashes.

5. Cool Environment: Keeping the living space cool with fans, air conditioning, or opening windows can provide relief during the day. Creating a comfortable environment helps alleviate the discomfort associated with hot flashes.

6. Mindful Eating: Certain foods and beverages, such as spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol, can trigger hot flashes. Being mindful of what you consume and avoiding or limiting these triggers may help reduce their occurrence. Make going to the farmers market and healthy meal prep new activities that you can do together! Buy new knives or a salad spinner, and new aprons and make it fun.

Support and Understanding

As a partner, it is crucial to offer emotional support and understanding during this challenging time. Open communication allows for the sharing of concerns and provides an opportunity to address any challenges that arise. Together, you can navigate this journey, supporting each other every step of the way.

Androgen deprivation therapy can be a life-saving treatment for prostate cancer but comes with its own set of challenges, including hot flashes. By implementing helpful tips and tricks, such as cooling blankets, layering clothing, and maintaining a cool environment, managing these symptoms can become more manageable. Remember, supporting your loved one emotionally is equally important during this journey. With patience, understanding, and a proactive approach, you can navigate ADT and its side effects, ensuring a better quality of life for both of you.
